The retractable roof on Wimbledon’s Centre Court is a significant engineering marvel designed to ensure that matches can continue during inclement weather, particularly rain, which is common during the Wimbledon Championships
The roof is made from a translucent fabric called PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene) and is supported by a series of steel trusses. This material allows natural light to filter through, maintaining a more open-air feel even when the roof is closed.
3Ks engineering Ltd were approached by our client in 2008, to tender for the main components for the Wimbledon centre court retractable roof. During the tender process, the main contractors visited our fabrication and machining facility to conduct an audit. During this visit they were very impressed with our capability, capacity, and high-quality standards, along with our ability to weld and machine these large steel components under one roof.
This led to 3Ks Engineering being awarded this very prestigious contract to manufacture twenty eight of the 16-tonne roof panels. The project was completed on time and on budget by the team at 3Ks Engineering Ltd.
